Happy New Year!

Woman in a green dress with a brown shawl kneeling at a Sheela na gig to place an orange rose

Happy New Year, everyone!

Today my husband and I visited Sheela na gig to speak to her about the coming year.

We reminded her that she is not forgotten, wished her a Happy New Year; and whispered to her the things we want to achieve this year. We asked her for her love and support.

We left her an offering each. She already had gifts bestowed upon her; including evergreens and coins.

A good start to the year. Wishing you all a fabulous 2024.

Love and blessings,
Wren

Fabulous Folklore: Friday 13th

Image of a Tweet by The Cemetery Witch talking about Friday the 13th

Happy Friday 13th!

Occurring at least once a year, up to a maximum of three times, Friday the 13th is considered a harbinger of bad luck by many people in the west. The irrational fear of the number 13 has its own name: triskaidekaphobia.

The unlucky nature of the number 13 is due - in part - to a Norse myth. Some gods were having a lovely dinner party in Valhalla and then Loki showed up, uninvited, making 13. He then had Balder shot, who died, and the world became dark, making 13 an unlucky number.

Middle Ages superstition combined with stories the of Last Supper may not have helped. There were 13 disciples at the table when Judas (who betrayed Jesus) was added, which was on the 13th of Nisan, Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday.

But 13 is also the number of moon cycles and menstrual cycles in a year, connecting the number 13 to the sacred feminine.

Let’s replace fear with feminine celebration. This is a sacred day - for Friday is Freyja’s Day - and it should be treated as such.

Fabulous Folklore: Hecate on the Hell Staircase

Hecate image featured on the painted Hell Staircase at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire.

This blurry image is Hecate and is part of a huge mural at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire. The mural covers the ceiling of what is known as the Hell Staircase, and was the last commission of Antonio Verrio (1636-1707), a Baroque mural painter who served the Crown over a thirty year period.

The impressive staircase portrays Hell as a fiery, gaping mouth of a huge cat. Spilling from its mouth are tormented souls, and there is an appearance from the Grim Reaper, who grapples his scythe. There is an equally beautiful Heaven Room, where gods and goddesses from ancient mythology mingle and socialise. It is here that we learn of Venus and Mars’ adultery.

I love that Hecate was included in the Hell ceiling mural.  She was a Titan goddess of great honour in Ancient Greek religion; presiding over sorcery and spells. She was associated with crossroads, light, necromancy, the Moon, ghosts and Witchcraft; amongst other things. She witnessed the abduction of Persephone to the Underworld and searched for her. It is hard to know what she is doing in the mural, but she seems to be pointing the way.

Review: The Sacred Cycles Journal by Jill Pyle

The Sacred Cycles Deck companion book displayed on a witch's alter in front of a heavy iron pentacle cauldron

I’m really grateful to have been sent this Sacred Cycles Journal created by Jill Pyle, founder of @goddessprovisions, Em Dewey @gardenofthemoon, Cidney Bachert @cidney.elizabeth and illustrated by Jessie White @seedsofspells. Published by @hayhouseinc (thank you!)

It works alongside the Sacred Cycles Deck, and is all about the tracking and honouring of your menstrual cycle, but you could easily use it without the cards.

There is information on your sacred cycle, poems and blessings, card spreads, crafting, mantras, cycle celebrations, journal prompts and pages, EVERYTHING you need to honour your body and its amazing cycle.

There is a list of new and full moons for 2022 and 2023, which is really helpful, and the illustrations are beautiful.

With all that’s going on in the world right now it’s even more important that we honour and celebrate our sacredness. It’s particularly perfect for those interested in the seasons and Earth energy.

I can’t wait to get started, thank you ladies!

Fabulous Folklore: Sheela-na-Gig

Wren, The Cemetery Witch laying flowers at the Braunston Sheela-na-Gig in a brown and black outfit with a green scarf

Here is our beautiful local Sheela-na-Gig.

Sheela-na-Gigs are architectural grotesques that depict a woman showing an exaggerated vulva. They are found throughout most of Europe, and first appeared between the 11th and 15th Century, depending on location.

They are common in Ireland, Britain, France and Spain, with Ireland having the highest concentration of surviving Sheela-na-Gigs. It is believed that there were over 140 Sheela-na-Gigs in Britain and Ireland, with about 80 still in their original locations, including this one.

They may have represented fertility figures, or been used to ward off death, evil, and demons. A popular hypothesis is that they represented a pagan goddess, but the situation is complex, with multiple interpretations.

Some suggest that they were used as ‘birthing stones’, and there is some folkloric evidence to suggest that they were loaned to labouring women. Another theory suggests that they warned against lust and ‘sins of the flesh’. What we do know is that scholars generally disagree on the origins and uses of these figures.

The villagers here can’t have liked her very much. She was found around 1920, upside down, being used as a step into the church, hidden from view. She is now around the back of the church, being battered by the elements, but at least she is now uncovered.

I like to place flowers by her at Beltane., I feel she should be honoured, as should fertility, life, female sexual energy, and women everywhere.

International Women’s Day (8th March 2022)

An old woman wearing a black hat and holding a crystal ball in a cottage setting

Family commitments meant that International Women’s Day all but passed me by yesterday; but I want to continue spreading the love that I saw so many of you and @thenordicwolfie (who I love so much) doing.

@gretathunberg reminded us yesterday that this day is less of a celebration, and more an opportunity to raise awareness for women’s issues and protest against the oppression that STILL happens on the basis of gender ~ BUT ~ there are many of you I’d like to celebrate!

There are SO many women who inspire me, and make this world a much better place. (Thank you.)

I started to tag you all but EVERY woman I know deserves a mention. I’m also not sure if Instagram allows such huge tagging ~ and I would surely run out of page.

Sending so much love to you all.

Review: Stone Circle - Clothing for Goddesses

Woman in a flower crown and green dress looking at the camera while standing in a kitchen

I’m just dropping in to give you a little peek of this gorgeous @mystonecircle Royal Dress; exclusively available through the Stone Circle Facebook group; Stone Circle - The Sisterhood (previously BohoVistaSister), and their website.

*Please note that Stone Circle release their dresses in batches, so if you can’t get what you’re after right now, it may become available again at a later date.*

For those not familiar with Stone Circle, they are a UK based clothing company creating clothes for women, designed by women. Stone Circle was founded through the Facebook group; which was originally started to create space for women to feel confident about themselves, share fashion tips, and to support other women to step into their power, and become the very best version of themselves.

I personally wear Stone Circle clothes. I love the way they are cut, the fabric, the colours (deep earth tones, warm natural hues, and golden era florals are popular), and the way they make me feel, which is magical, and like my true self. It’s fair to say I’m a little bit obsessed!

Stone Circle will be doing a drop for autumn and Samhain soon, featuring some darker colours; so get following their Instagram page and the Facebook group for exclusives, live showcases and try-ons; and to just to be part of a really beautiful community.

I wore this dress out yesterday, and it was perfect. It can easily be dressed up with scarf and boots for autumn.

Thank you so much Stone Circle!

Review: Channel Your Goddess Energy by Kirsten Riddle

A copy of the book Channel Your Goddess Energy by Kirsten Riddle

Today for #witchbookwednesday I’m sharing this beautiful book - it’s called Channel Your Goddess Energy by Kirsten Riddle, and it was given to me many moons ago by my lovely friend Cate @cate.loves.holistic.health

This is an absolutely brilliant book which focuses on over 50 goddesses, some of which I have never heard of before. It gives background information, magickal correspondences and suggestions for ritual, for each goddess.

Brightly coloured inside and out it’s an absolute feast for the eyes! The goddesses are divided into five sections: Earth and Creation, Sea and Sky, Sun and Moon, Fire and Ice, and Death and the Underworld.

There is a section on finding your goddess archetype and how to work with your goddess. I haven’t seen this book around, but it’s beautiful, and well worth getting if you ever get the chance.

Magickal Correspondences for Coventina - Celtic goddess of springs, wells and rivers:
Planet: Moon
Stone: Pearl
Food/drink: Water
Flower/plant: Hibiscus, Pine
Scent: Pine
Animal Totem: Fish, Kingfisher
Miscellaneous: Cup, cauldron, well, spring, leaves, coins, water, pins

Word Magick: Prayer to Mother Earth

A mysterious arched doorway leading through to a sunlit garden at the Chalice Well Gardens in Glastonbury

Mother Earth,
Enlighten what’s dark in me,
Strengthen what’s weak in me,
Mend what’s broken in me,
Bind what’s bruised in me,
Heal what’s sick in me,
And lastly, revive whatever peace and love has died in me.

Moon Magick: New Moon Baths

Beautiful bathroom with a black fireplace, orange petals in the bubbles in the roll top bath and flowers on the hearth

The New Moon is associated with new beginnings, reflection, introspection, gaining clarity, and starting projects.

It’s a great opportunity to cleanse and ready yourself for these new opportunities, and for the next part of the lunar cycle.

Water and salt are both cleansing, and if you have a bath tub in your home then you have, in effect, got an extremely large cauldron(!), so bath magick is perfect for the New Moon.

Himalayan salt is perfect for bath rituals, but if you don’t have any, any bath salts will do. Aim for a 1% salt solution.

Prepare your bathroom, and whilst the bath is running think about the things you’d like to call into your life in the coming weeks and month. Write a list, then spend some time visualising them happening. Make the intention that before these things can happen any negativity or blocks must be washed away.

Get into the bath and make a mental note of how you feel. Feel the heat, the silkiness of the salt in the water against your skin, the flicker of candles, the aromas you may smell. When you are ready, imagine past traumas, bad habits, unhelpful or negative thought patterns, and any hurt you may have experienced which may be holding you back wishing off you, and disappearing down the plughole. When you do pull the plug, again, imagine those unhelpful things washing away, and leaving you ready to face the month ahead with a clear mind and enthusiasm.

Magickal Places: The Goddess Temple - Glastonbury

Beautiful candlelit, autumn altar featuring a large image of a woman in a beautiful dress

Here is this year’s Autumn Equinox altar at the Glastonbury Goddess Temple.

The Glastonbury Goddess Temple is a community organisation dedicated to worship of the indigenous British Goddess in all Her forms. It is believed to be the first formally recognised public indigenous British Goddess Temple in Europe for 1500 years (or more).

The Temple was originally pop-up in structure, but has been permanently housed in the High Street since Imbolc 2002, formally being recognised as a place of worship the following year.

As you can see it has been decorated in beautiful Mabon colours. It was the first time in all the years I’ve been visiting that it was empty, so Mr Cemetery and I had a beautiful and private moment of reflection, introspection, and contemplation together.

I always find the run up to Samhain a very deep and thoughtful time; my thoughts always stray to those who have passed over.

Magickal Places: The Chalice Well - Glastonbury

The Chalice Well, Galstonbury decorated with pink flowers and fruit to celebrate the Autumn Equinox

The Chalice Well (also known as the Red Spring) is situated at the bottom of Glastonbury Tor.

It is said to have been in use for the last 2000 years, and as a result it is one of the most ancient, revered, and well-known holy wells in Britain.

It is fed by a deep aquifer in the lower levels of the Pennard Sands, and even during a drought it issues at least 25,000 gallons of water a day!

The waters that flow from the Red Spring are said to have healing properties, and so many people come here to bathe or to drink the sacred waters. It is said that faeries from under the Tor spend time in the Well, giving the waters their magical powers.

The waters leave a red iron deposit, meaning many myths and legends have been attributed to this special place. Some say that this spring emerged from the spot where the chalice (Holy Grail) that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper was placed; and some people believe that the Holy Grail is actually buried here.

For others the water is representative of the very essence of life, and see the Well as a symbol of femininity. Consequently, it has become a destination for those paying homage to feminine deities.

Whatever one’s beliefs, it is a very important place to spiritual people of many paths from all over the world, and well worth a visit.

Moon Magick: 7 Words for The New Moon in Virgo

Pink candle in a bowl surrounded by lit candles, jars of herbs and dried rose petals

I’ve been feeling a bit frazzled and under the weather recently, and the approaching energy of yesterday’s New Moon in Virgo definitely brought with it a need to rest physically, mentally, and spiritually.

New Moon is a time to reset and reconnect; and I definitely needed to some time to reconnect with myself. The New Moon is also a brilliant time to declutter, tidy, and organise.

So yesterday I did a little self-care spell and took a much needed pause. Today feels like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders, and so I spent this morning sorting out some unwanted clothes for the charity shop, and writing some lists. The path ahead is now clear again!

REST
RESET
RELEASE
REPLENISH
RECHARGE
REFLECT
RECONNECT

What have you done to rest, reset, release, replenish, recharge, reflect, or reconnect this New Moon?

Review: Garden of Chthonia Soaps by Lizzie

Two Garden of Chthonia soaps surrounded by wooden spoons, flowers, runes and herbs

Two of my favourite resources on Instagram are the pages run by the lovely Lizzie.

A huge amount of interesting, in-depth, and inspiring information can be found on Lizzie’s Folk Herbalism page ~ @the_wortcunning_wyfe ~ alongside lots of beautiful close ups of the herbs and plants she is talking about. I have learned so much, and her page is an absolute joy!

Over on Lizzie’s other account ~ @gardenofchthonia ~ you can find website details for her amazing lotions and potions. https://www.gardenofchthonia.com/

I have been a customer of Lizzie’s for a while now. In a bid to reduce our plastic waste we switched over to soap bars for washing our hands and showering some years ago, and after trying sooooo many soaps in that time, I can honestly say that Lizzie’s are the best.

I thoroughly recommend that you check out both pages, which are a wealth of information, and take a peek at Lizzie’s website, too.

Review: Gaya Candles

Selection of candles on a wooden slice next to flowers and a cauldron

I was really lucky to be gifted some candles to try from @gaya.candles. They are a company based in Glasgow who create “hand made candles infused with specific herbs, flowers, scents, and spices, selected for their magical properties for wealth, love, and health.” Look how beautiful they are!

Gaya explained to me that she burns the green Patchouli & Bergamot “Prosperity” candle in dedication to the Goddess Abundia; this candle has been created to bring financial wealth into the home or business. I have to say that this has THE MOST beautiful fragrance, and I’m super impressed that the scent continues to linger, unlike other scented candles I have tried. As an Aromatherapist, I can truly appreciate the craftswoman ship and expertise that has gone into creating this, and I’ll definitely be buying another once this one has burned.

Next up is the Rose Gold “Nirvana” Soy Tin Candle, which is a premium soy wax candle housed in a beautiful metal tin. It carries the gentle scent of Sandalwood, Rose, & Geranium.

The beautiful and simple labels on these candles really appeals to me, and the tissue paper wrapped and wax sealed wrappings of the pillar candles was such a beautiful touch.

The largest candle, a “Goddess Morrigan Candle” is so beautiful. As a colour lover this really impressed me - it is a dreamy metallic and glittery gold which fades and blends down into a dark berry red. Gaya also offers a Goddess Hecate candle and a Goddess Isis candle. I have placed this candle in my Goddess-themed bathroom, where I hope the feel-good energies I’m getting from it will be impressed upon my daughters, two of which are about to enter those awkward teenage years.

These are seriously beautiful candles and I would encourage you to check out Gaya’s page and website. You can tell that her creations have been created from the heart; each piece has been so lovingly thought out. Even just handling these candles and looking at the website has filled me with inspiration, which has given me a push to get my own shop (not candles!) sorted and finished.

If you’re a candle lover (who isn’t a candle lover?!) take a look at this beautiful range.
